Wal-Mart - The Crushing Supergiant

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 8:54 am

Imagine having a little shop that expands to a multi-billion dollar business that outsells all other stores. The Walton’s lived this very experience. It went from Arkansas in the 60’s to everywhere in America now. Wal-Mart has also expanded to different places around the world. For a store, Wal-Mart has become a very controversial topic of conversation (unlike CCS).

“Unbeatable low prices” is a promise that Wal-Mart really does manage to keep up with. With the economy as low as it is right now, shopping at Wall Mart and taking advantage of their low prices everyday rather than waiting for sales at other shops like Champs or Pacsun really can make a difference to a family that has a strict budget.

There is a lot of bad mouthing when it comes to Wal-Mart’s products and where they come from and why the products are so cheap like the Snuggie . This retailer does not hide information of where the products come from. It only strides to achieve its promise.

There is basically the negotiation from WalMart to the supplier of goods: ‘Give us a good price for resell so we still make a profit or we won’t be using your products!’ Producers of products, instead of downgrading their packaging labels or other cuts, end up getting their services overseas and cutting off workers. Dollar stores all around the country base their ideals on the same thing; promising all items for a dollar or less (aka the Net 10 rule).

There is also the issue of Wal-Mart not treating its employees right. There are numerous complaints about how they should be making more and have more benefits. These stores usually pay the minimum for the state they are in, and full time employees of course receive more benefits than part time benefits. This is true for all companies regardless of where they are located.

What is often not mentioned is that Wal-Mart is one of the largest employers in America. They help people here in the US provide for their families whether fully or as a supplement. The type of job one chooses is very much a choice and working retail is not a contract. Quitting and looking for other jobs is an option.

Little towns and main street America suffers when big corporations move into town. Any big corporation. Some franchises however are brought by people who live in those towns. Wal-Mart does not export employees to its department stores, which means every time one of their stores opens everyone being employed are people from that little town who had no jobs. Some counties have contracts with big companies like Wal-Mart supplying them with most of their unemployed locals who receive benefits from the government.

Wal-Mart is beating out most other companies and retail stores like Soft Surroundings, Bealls, and Boscovs with their mass produced products that are sold cheaply and at any time 24 hours a day. This store and its distribution centers provide jobs and steady pay to those who otherwise would not be employed. Small family owned shops hire only family and some friends. Who you know doesn’t apply here.
